Organic Umber Vessel No.1
Brown stoneware, sodium silicate, glaze
7” Diameter x 4.25” Tall
Marked by the artist
A one-of-a-kind ceramic vessel exploring the tension of material between control and fracture.
Wheel-thrown in stoneware, the form is developed through a multi-stage process in which sodium silicate is applied to the surface, and the walls are expanded from within as the exterior begins to set. Creating surface tension, this gesture produces a subtle fracture along the entire surface that cannot be replicated.
The resulting texture carries the presence of erosion, as though shaped slowly over time rather than formed in a single moment. Subtle rock impressions are occasionally embedded, further reinforcing this dialogue between material, pressure, and time.
The interior is lined with a glossy glaze, a counterpoint to the raw exterior.
Fired multiple times to achieve vitrification and desired surface results.
