Artist Statement
Alexandria Roby is a multidisciplinary artist with over a decade of experience in graphic design and photography who returned to fine art in 2023. She is drawn to the connection between self and earth that emerges through working with raw materials. Based in the United States, her contemporary ceramic practice reflects the organic textures, tones, and contrasts of the natural world, creating one-of-a-kind sculptural vessels that bring quiet beauty and intention to any space.
Working in both wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques, Alexandria creates sculptural ceramic vessels that balance strength and fragility, refinement and imperfection. Drawn to forms that feel unearthed and inherently wild, she often incorporates collected natural materials such as rocks, shells, and wood to create distinctive surface textures, allowing intentional and natural breakage to emerge through the process. Each piece develops its own narrative through exploration of material, texture, and transformation.
Inspired by lineages of artisans, timeless forms, and traditional techniques, Alexandria incorporates wild clay and atmospheric firing into her practice, allowing flame and material to become collaborators in the creative process. Often leaving surface areas unglazed to highlight the raw beauty of the clay itself. Her vessels feel both ancient and newly formed, inviting a tactile connection to the material and the beauty of imperfection.
