Wood Fired Organic Form No.2
This piece was created during my residency in Onishi, Japan. Hand-built and carved ceramic vessel made from dark stoneware. Finished in an anagama, a traditional Japanese single-chamber, wood-fire kiln.
The atmospheric firing process allows the flame to shape the final surface decoration, resulting in natural variations that make every vase uniquely its own. This firing took place over the course of 73+ hours in an outdoor kiln. Reaching the necessary temperature by manually stoking and maintaining the flames. This is a very hands-on process. Working as a group, taking on 8-hour shifts to monitor the temperature and add wood consistently for multiple days. The coloration on the surface is created by wood ash hitting the surface of the piece at extremely high temperatures, around 2350+. The color variation depends largely on where the piece is located in the kiln.
This piece has been marked with the artist’s stamp.
